About Heart and Stroke Foundation of New Brunswick:
Heart and Stroke Foundation of New Brunswick (HSFNB) works to help people live free from heart disease and stroke through preventing the disease, saving lives, and promoting recovery. A Canadian dies every five minutes from heart disease or stroke, and 1.6 million Canadians live with heart disease or with the repercussions of a stroke. Risk factors for heart disease and stroke include obesity and high blood pressure, both of which occur at a higher rate in New Brunswick than in Canada as a whole. HSFNB is the only provincial foundation of Heart and Stroke that operates separately from Heart and Stroke Canada.
In F2019, HSFNB allocated 62% of program spending to health promotion. HSFNB’s Stroke Navigation program helps stroke victims adjust back to life in the community by supporting a victim’s recovery goals, providing resources to manage their condition, and offering them tools to navigate the healthcare system. The charity last reported quantified outputs in F2017; more than 4,000 high school students and 14,000 New Brunswickers were trained in CPR, defibrillator use, and general emergency lifesaving techniques by 300 instructors. In F2017, HSFNB designated six elementary schools as ‘heart healthy’ for making healthy choices accessible and popular among students. In F2017, the charity funded its 400th publicly accessible defibrillator.
In F2019, HSFNB allocated 39% of program spending to medical research. The charity last reported quantified outputs in F2017; Dr. Petra Kienesberger was granted $100,000 for her research on how excess body fat weakens the heart. Results and Impact
Heart and Stroke Foundation of New Brunswick reports that its defibrillators were used to save the lives of five people in F2017. From F2008 - F2017, HSFNB’s defibrillators saved 14 lives.
While Ci highlights these key results, they may not be a complete representation of Heart and Stroke Foundation of New Brunswick’s results and impact.
Heart and Stroke Foundation of New Brunswick is a Medium-sized charity, with donations and special events revenue of $3.1m in F2019. Administrative costs are 8% of revenues and fundraising costs are 33% of donations. This means overhead costs are 42%. For every dollar donated, 58 cents go to the cause. This is outside of Ci’s reasonable range for overhead spending.
HSFNB has $2.4m in funding reserves, of which $1.1m is donor-endowed. Excluding donor-endowed funds, the charity could cover annual program costs for roughly 9 months.

It took them the better part of the school year but five students from Fredericton’s Bliss Carman Middle School have created something truly wonderful.
Their crimson gown, which swirls around the legs of a model, is a piece of wearable technology that incorporates heart. or rather, a heartbeat.
The dress was created for the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada’s fundraising gala at Casino New Brunswick in April, and on Thursday night everyone else will get to see it as part of a special talent night at Bliss Carman.Heart And Stroke Casino Nb PeiLucinda Mills, the art teacher behind the project, said the students work very hard on this project which incorporates a glowing heartbeat pattern right on the skirt.
’What they used were neo-pixel strips and they worked on soldering those neo-pixel strips together .. and connected [them] to a microcontroller that can be programmed .. to make it light up to look like a human heartbeat,’ she said.Heart And Stroke Foundation
The dress will be on display on Thursday night at the Bliss Carman Middle School Evening of the Arts, a showcase of Grade 8 talent.
The event is open to the public and tickets are $5 at the door. Some of the proceeds will go to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.CBC’s Journalistic Standards and Practices|About CBC NewsHeart And Stroke PortalRelated Stories
